Housing Works, the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the United States, hosts a monthly “Editor’s Choice” series where fashions elite come together to shop in the name of charity. For August’ installment of the popular Editor’s Choice series, Allure Fashion Director and Housing Works Board Member Michael Carl hosted “Last Days of Summer” at the Tribeca location.

MV Fashion 504The one-night-only charity shopping event featured carefully curated items by the fabulously handsome Michael Carl and featured one final dose of stylish warm weather clothes before we start bundling up. The soiree was co-hosted by fashion designers Charlotte Ronson and Shoshanna Gruss, who both donated items to be sold at the event. “I’m so excited to host my first Housing Works event as a board member in the company of Charlotte and Shoshanna,” Carl said. “We’re going to celebrate the summer while raising money for Housing Works’ mission to fight AIDS in New York.”

manolo 60Upon entering the store I immediately spied a pair of Manolo Blahnik Carolyne slingback heels in dark gray. At the low price of $60, I grabbed the classic alligator embossed heels and tucked them away in a safe place so nobody could steal them away. Marie purchased a Shoshanna bikini for $40 and a pair of Charlotte Ronson wedge heels with tassel front for $65. Jen gets the award for most hilarious purchase of the night with a Bollywood dance fitness video. Also, they sold new havaianas flip flops for a mere $5.

9008172590082344The real jewel among the selection was an Arrogant Cat sequin mini dress with cut-out back, high neck and draped sleeves for $60. Famespy intern, Alise, emerged from the dressing room in the crystallized dress and my jaw hit the floor. Our youthful teenager looked like she was about to walk the red carpet and was immediately transformed from innocent Minnesota teen to the quintessential New Yorker. She looked spectacular and was ready to hit the town to show off her new find. It just goes to show that you never know what you’ll find when you dig through the racks of one of NYC’s best thrift shops.

MV Fashion 544alexander-mcqueen-knuckle-dusterShoshanna attended the event clutching the Alexander McQueen Knuckle Duster bag and had me drooling. The powerful showpiece is an attention getter and something that is visually pleasing that I would be open to displaying in my house like fine art. The skull and Swarovski crystal-embellished knuckle duster clutch mixes goth-chic with high fashion glamour making it the only accessory you need for a night out.

Eek! by Eugenia Kim Hits Urban Outfitters: High-End Hats for the Masses

eek beret

Eugenia Kim is one of my absolute favorite hat designers and over the years I have amassed a collection of her heavenly hats. She is responsible for the “Muffy,” an equestrian-like cap that became a wait-listed item and was worn by Ashlee Simpson, Keira Knightley and other starlets.

eekeugenia kim

Eugenia Kim has continuously reinvented the Muffy, using different fabrics, textures and prints depending on the season, but the style is always the same. Her hats start at around $200 so I was thrilled that she was doing a collection with Urban Outfitters of fun and fabulous hats at reasonable prices. Just another example of how high-end designer collaborations are becoming the coup-du-jour, allowing high-end fashion for the masses.

Eek! Eugenia Kim just launched at Urban Outfitters with hats ranging from $28 to $48. Kim interprets the Urban Outfitters collection with a young, fresh feel to accommodate to the younger consumer who shops there.

The collection features a Muffy-like equestrian cap, a version of her glamorous cloche which is perfect for fall, cozy cable-knit beret with buckle impression (my personal favorite) as well as hair clips and headbands which incorporate feathers and other embellishments.

ALLISON PARRIS’ Dress That Launched a Fashion Obsession: Vintage Inspired Clothing is Flirty & Investment Worthy

belvedere_castle2A few months ago I attended the opening of the first “Second Time Around” consignment store in New York City. The racks were full of high-end labels such as Chanel and Prada and some of NYC’s best dressed were in attendance. Among the onslaught of fabulous clothing, both in attendance and on the rack, my eyes were glued to one dress. The Dress! Like nothing I have ever seen, this piece was a showstopper. The silk strapless cocktail dress was the perfect creamy shade of eggshell for the summer with a brass zipper up the back. But the piece-des-resistance was the carved brass paillettes that dangled from the upper bodice which made the frock stand out among everything else. This was something I had to have!

brass pailetteSeeing “the dress” it literally made my heart stop and I kept my eye on the fabulous gal wearing it, in awe of the amazing cut and slimming affect the dress had. Short on time I left the event without ever finding out who designed this gorgeous creation. The next morning, photos arrived from the event and low and behold there was my dress. Designed by Allison Parris, my fashion fancy was born.

The Allison Parris collection was founded by designer Allison Parris, who attended New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, and lawyer/entrepreneur Marissa Kim in the Fall of 2008. The first Allison Parris fall/winter ready-to-wear collection debuted at New York Fashion Week in February 2009. The line is chock full of feminine and flirty pieces with vintage-inspired details that I had yet to see elsewhere. The overall look was sophisticated with an edge, much like Allison herself.

Silk taffeta ruffle dress

Viewing the Fall 2009 collection, I wanted to grab everything off the rack and run. The classic pieces were highlighted by individual components that individualized each garment. Up close, the carved brass paillette dress that caught my initial attention was even more spectacular. The silk material had a weave-like appearance which gave the dress an unexpected relaxed feel, making the garment easily wearable. The contrast of the luxurious brass detail incorporated high-end glamour with comfort, providing the wearer with easy-going elegance and spectacular detailing. I was in love!

6088_100141950484_42443500484_2075164_1020886_nAnother standout piece is the silk taffeta strapless dress with organza ruffle skirt. The skirt is a fun cascade of coquettish ripples which is the perfect balance of playfulness while still looking elegant and refined. I ordered one on the spot in plum.

Luxurious fabrics combined with extraordinary detail result in a distinctive point of view making every exceptional piece feel one-of-a-kind. Inspecting the garments gives you an appreciation for the fine tailoring, vintage-inspired buttons, distinctive femininity and a delicate level of detail which is often overlooked. Allison obviously put her creative blood, sweat and tears into these garments and it shows.

Other highlights in the collection include tailored shirtdresses belted with luxurious leather belts, a white hot feather mini dress, and a navy tulle skirt which is more diva than ballerina. When paired with a simple tank will have Carrie Bradshaw wannabe’s pining for it.

runwayUpon seeing the brass pailette dress I assumed it would range in the 4 figures, but it retails for $650 which is reasonable considering the craftsmanship of the chic design. Most pieces can be worn for day or night, making them investments that will carry you throughout the seasons. Allison’s vision is clear: fashionably chic pieces for today’s woman that are classic with unique characteristics. This is not your cookie cutter collection of little black dresses.

In addition to designing fabulous clothing, Allison Parris is committed to eco-responsibility and the line uses sustainable, organic and/or repurposed fabrics in the line where possible without compromising quality. The line also uses recycled PET satin, made from recycled soda bottles, to line many of its pieces. All fur used in the collection is vintage repurposed fur.

n42443500484_1598076_2102991After only one season, the brand has built a following of fashionistas who covet individuality. The Fall/Winter 2009 Collection will be available at Jesse James in New York and Hu’s Wear in Washington D.C. on September 1, 2009 in addition to Allison Parris’ online store

Allison is currently in the process of creating her Spring/Summer 2010 line which will be revealed during New York Fashion Week on September 15, 2009. The Spring / Summer 2010 line is inspired by the music of the Andrew’s Sisters of the 1940’s. I can’t wait!

MINX NAILS IT: The Manicure of the Moment is the Hot New Trend Just Ask Rihanna, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Fergie, Lady Gaga

A few months ago I reported on the hottest new trend in nail art: Minx. It’s been awhile since something truly original hit the nail market and as soon as I spotted Minx nails I was desperate to try it. Since then, Minx has become the manicure-du-jour for celebrities, singers, actresses, and fashionistas.

Marie Claire MinxAfter my initial article on Minx I was bombarded with questions about where NYC gals could get their Minx fix. At the time there was only one licensed Minx nail technician in the greater metropolitan area, and she was so booked that getting an appointment with her required a late night trip to Brooklyn or a month long wait. Finally, Minx is available in Manhattan at the fabulous Fifi Salon in midtown where I finally got to try out the Minx experience… and loved every minute of it.

If you take notice of your favorite celebrities sporting high-art nails in sparkly metallic’s and bold graphic prints then chances are their fabulous nail fashion was courtesy of Minx. Minx has been in high demand since the nail decals were spotted on Beyoncé in her “Single Ladies” video. In addition Mariah Carey, Eve, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Fergie, Lady Gaga, Victoria Beckham, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lily Allen, Kelly Clarkson, Heidi Klum, Paris Hilton and Jordin Sparks have been “Minxed.”

Lady Gaga’s manicurist, Naja Rickette, has provided the diva with Minx in Golden Lightning for her “Dirty, Sexy, Rich” video, Silver Lightning Minx for her music video “Lovegame,” and Fishnet for her “Just Dance” video. Gaga has even Twittered about her devotion to Minx saying: “Patent Nails!! Applied and removed with heat by a company called MINX. Or you can go where I went in LA for my video.”

Glamour MinxFergie has been sporting the Black with Silver Stripe Minx for a few months, creating her signature new look. In the Black Eyes Peas video for “Boom Boom Pow,” Fergie can be seen wearing Minx as well as in photographs from the Hollywood premiere of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”.

The latest craze in nail art, Minx decals are made of foil-like coverings which are applied to clean, buffed nails and only require heat lamps to seal the design. In addition to the fabulous assortment of nail art available, Minx is actually good for your nails, requires no dry time and won’t damage your nails.  The end result is nails that appear to have been dipped in liquid gold, or silver. The most popular Minx designs are Silver Lightning and Gold Lightning, but lately a vast array of designs have been spotted such as flowers, fishnet, monogram, American flags and President Obama.

Lily Allen Minx TweetThe manicure of the moment can only be applied by a Minx Certified Professional and finding one in NYC has been tough… until now.

Fifi Salon is located in an unassuming building on 57th Street. I was familiar with the neighborhood, but never knew there was a building which housed countless beauty salons in 1 spot. I was warmly greeted by Irene Nahon and her staff of lovely ladies who immediately made me feel like I had known them forever. Irene considers herself a perfectionist when it comes to nails, so before we began she trimmed my dry cuticles and buffed my uneven nails. I selected a silver fishnet design which had a neutral base color for my manicure, a design not as bold as the others which made it perfect for fingernails.

11.23.08 Rihanna at AMAs photo by Kimmie KyeesIrene selected the decal size which best fit my nail, heated it, applied to my fingernail and then buffed off the excess which resulted in a perfect look. The entire process took about 25 minutes. Voila! As life-long nail biter AI am not used to seeing impressive looking fingertips when I look down but I was flabbergasted. My glossy nails sparkled and looked radiant. I was most impressed at how perfectly the Minx fit my nail and particularly how Irene trimmed the ends and sides for a natural look. I was in love!

After chit-chatting for an hour, I had to head home but vowed to return very soon with my cousin Taryn for a Minx manicure / pedicure. By the way, Fifi Salon carries the all-time greatest nail strengthener, which is near impossible to find: Trind. My pal Heather turned me onto Trind after hearing about it at work. The clear polish is applied to bare nails everyday for a week and then weekly after a manicure. Again, I am a nail-biter and this product literally made my nails grow long and solid. I haven’t been able to find Trind in months so the fact that Fifi carries the nail strengthener in addition to the entire line of Trind products, just proves she is the nail maestro and able to spot fabulous products that actually work.

To date, Minx has been worn by singers in a number of music videos including:

RACHEL ZOE Is Back Tonight on Bravo! Peek Inside Her Outrageous Fashion Studio

rachel-zoe-project-season-2The Rachel Zoe Project” starts it second season tonight on Bravo TV and I couldn’t be more thrilled. If you are a lover of fashion, all things glamour and celebrities, then this is the show for you. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and her team, including my favorite stylist Brad Goreski, take you through a whirlwind of fashion shows, awards season, designer collections and styling: dress selection, shoes, hair, makeup, and jewels.

rz1The mega-stylist became a household name several years ago after transforming Nicole Richie from a fashion not to fashionably hot. Richie’s boho-chic look meant a complete overhaul on her selection of clothes in addition to hair and accessories (remember Nicole’s long, beached hair with black highlights). The queen of celebrity stylists is who A-list stars who need that extra dose of glamour for their red carpet appearances. Cameron Diaz, Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Garner, Debra Messing, Eva Mendes, Keira Knightley, and Anne Hathaway all put themselves in Rachel’s fashionable hands and have always come out on top. It’s rare that someone she selected a fashion ensemble for ends up on the worst dressed list.

rz 1Zoe often styles her clients in the Zoe-esque fashion that she embodies herself: bohemian glamour, vintage clothes, super high heels, the latest “It” bag, heavy accessories, huge sunnies (sunglasses). Rachel is often seen wearing her signature sunglasses paired with vintage clothes, platform heels and oodles of baubles. And let’s not forget her personal fashion archive which includes multiple versions of the iconic Hermes Birkin as well as a huge collection of high-end vintage clothes and jewels.

rachel zoeRachel Zoe’s empire is growing quickly with the announcement that is launching a jewelry and accessories line she created for QVC, which debuts during fashion week.  In addition to her day job, Zoe consults for as well as stars in her hit TV show and recently published a New York Times bestselling book.

Huffington Post got a glimpse into the studio of Rachel Zoe to see the style icons that inspired her, the fall items she cannot live without and the monster collection of shoes. I DIE!!!

Season 2 of The Rachel Zoe Project premieres Monday August 24th at 10 p.m. EST on Bravo.

Huffington Post: Describe your personal style.
Rachel Zoe: My personal style is definitely grounded in 60s and 70s — I can’t seem to get out of it and it’s what works best for me. I love the glam bohemian thing, the music from the 60s and the 70s, everything about the women in this era: Marianne Faithful, Bianca Jagger, Edie Sedgwick, Brigitte Bardot, Ali McGraw, the women of Halston and Yves Saint Laurent- there are so many. It’s the whole time period that goes into Studio 54 — its glamour, sexy glamour.

yslHP: What is your go-to outfit?
RZ: I would say a pair of bell bottom jeans- either wide leg or bell bottom that are high waisted too- with a t-shirt or tank from Alexander Wang or Phillip Lim, and usually a Chanel or Louis Vuitton jacket- vintage or new. And always platforms — those are either Louis Vuitton, Brian Atwood, Lanvin, Azzedine Alaia, or Christian Louboutin.
HP: What are your must-have items this fall?
RZ: A tuxedo jacket — I love the one from Balmain. I also love the bags that Marc Jacobs did for Louis Vuitton for the fall- they are amazing. I am obsessed with leggings and I love the leather pair by Rag and Bone. When it comes to leggings I stick to black- black leather or black stretch leggings. Any leggings for fall are great. I love the jewelry that Karl Lagerfeld did for Chanel with all the jade and the onyx. He did this thing that goes around your fingers like rings but it’s sort of a bracelet into a ring. I love the color combination. The neon pieces Marc Jacobs’ pieces are incredible- the yellow wrap coat in particular.

HP: What inspires you?
RZ: So many periods in fashion inspire me depending on the client I am working with. Primarily it’s the designers and what they show on their runways that inspire me. That’s why it’s so important that I go to the shows because I leave with a ton of ideas- whether it’s couture or ready to wear. That’s what gets me excited to do the next project. When I see what designers are showing, it tells me what’s happening now, this is what’s going on now, this is what will work with that client, etc.

HP: How do you stay relevant?
RZ: It’s not ever an intention — I keep working harder and harder at my job and diversifying in the kind of work I do. We just launched my website on August 4th- it crashed on the first day because we had too much traffic but everyone kept saying it was a good thing.

I update my site everyday. I personally pick what goes onto the site, and it takes a lot of time- it’s really important because I don’t want to put something out there that I’m not excited about. From Monday to Friday there will be a key item and that will dictate a trend of an idea- and if it’s an item that’s super expensive, I’ll always give an alternate that I call “parallel universe.” You’re in the same universe, you’re just getting it for less money. What we’re doing is the daily newsletter, and each day will be a different category: apparel, beauty, lifestyle, jewelry, etc.

There’s a section called “Ask Rachel” and because I’m very infatuated with twitter, people can ask me questions through my site and link to twitter. I always give advice and things like that as we move forward. Ultimately, I want to sell products on the site and have an e-commerce component- it will be a resource for everything. Everything I put on the site links to a place you can purchase. But baby steps first- I want to get it right and then the people that are looking at it will give their feedback.

I’m also launching of collection on QVC. It’s a line of bags, jewelry, hats, scarves outerwear, and sunglasses- so that’s really exciting. It’s a very accessible price point and everything is under $150. The jewelry is way under $100 and the bags are about $120 but almost everything is in that range.

rachel-zoe_clothing5 Things About Rachel…

1. She loves to cook and bake. Her favorite thing to make is chocolate chip banana bread.
2. She’s a good tennis player and a great skier.
3. She’s obsessed with Warren Buffet.
4. She always has to watch “Friends” and “Will and Grace” before she goes to sleep. It’s too hard for her to pick a favorite Friends character — she loves them all.
5. The last book she read was “The World of Coco Chanel: Friends, Fashion, Family” by Edmonde Charles-Roux.
