NBC comedy “30 Rock” and AMC’s “Mad Men” led the way when nominations for the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed today.

30RockBesides having the eyes of the nation on her for her Sarah Palin impersonation on Saturday Night Live during last year’s Presidential campaign, Tina Fey also earned Emmy respect with her NBC sitcom, “30 Rock,” leading the pack with a walloping 22 nominations. AMC’s hit “Mad Men” was the top drama with 16 bids and “Family Guy” became the first animated series since “The Flintstones” in 1961 to be nominated as best comedy series.  Other top nominated shows were HBO’s film “Grey Gardens,” which earned 17 nominations, HBO’s film “Into the Storm” with 14, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” with 13 and HBO’s Iraq war miniseries “Generation Kill” with 11.

farrahFarrah Fawcett, who died of cancer three weeks ago, was honored with one final Emmy nomination for her documentary charting her battle cancer in “Farrah’s Story.” ‘It’s very bittersweet. Farrah passed away three weeks ago today,’ said Alana Stewart, who helped film her long-time friend for “Farrah’s Story.” She went on to say: ‘She’s been nominated before, and I just know that this would be the most important one of all.’

Justin Timberlake was nominated for guest actor for Saturday Night Live after he and Andy Samberg won an Emmy 2007 for “D— in a Box.” Katherine Heigl, who nearly died on the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, was not nominated this year. The actress famously withdrew herself from 2008 consideration, saying she “wasn’t given the material” necessary to warrant the honor.

MadMenI was shocked that Emmy didn’t bite HBO’s vampire hit True Blood for any of the major categories. FX’s “The Shield” was also surprisingly snubbed in drama and acting after the show had one of the best series finales in TV history. Also missing was FX’s firehouse drama “Rescue Me,” and NBC’s “ER,” which ended its 15 year run in the spring with what critics called some of the shows best work ever.

family guyA category new to this year honors comedy, musical and variety series. The nominees are The Colbert Report, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Late Show with David Letterman, Real Time with Bill Maher and Saturday Night Live.

CBS will air the Emmys live on Sunday, Sept. 20, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. How I Met Your Mother star and former Emmy nominee Neil Patrick Harris, will host the awards.
