Newton wore 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Spring/Summer 2009 recycled zipper dress on the show and it was absolutely stunning. The main focus of the black dress is a big swirl of goldtone zippers sewn onto the dress accented by allover ruffles and sheer trim. Kate Bosworth wore the dress to a recent event and her version of the dress was actually specially made for her being produced from solely green materials. The dress regularly retailed for $895, but with summer sales going on I found it at Bergdorf Goodman for $537. Simply scrumptious!
If you love the zipper detail like I do, I have the spot for you where you can get a zipper dress, cape, shirt, or obi belt for a fraction of the cost. My latest obsession is Sohung Designs Collective, located in NYC’s East Village, which carries five designers other than Sohung. The shop opened in late September, but I didn’t have a chance to really explore the store until March and since then I have been hooked. Owner Sohung Tong started selling his line of handmade clothing at the Young Designers Market in Nolita and worked his way up to selling it at downtown boutiques.
The store’s multiple designers each have their own little display area offering a variety of styles from delicate gold jewelry, jeweled bibb necklaces, silk-screened men’s’ t-shirts, Rodarte-inspired dresses, belts, hats, etc. I recently took 2 friends who fell in love, which resulted in a 1-hour dress up / runway show in the shop. I walked out with the zipper cape while a friend bought a zipper dress AND zipper obi belt. Best yet, the prices are reasonable and nothing is really over the top in terms of price.
