Bidders have a rare opportunity to own some of Monroe’s iconic accessories, including the white umbrella used during a 1948 photo shoot at Jones Beach with photographer Andre De Dienes. The Evans Sweson Frame white umbrella with a wood hook handle is one of the items featured at the auction.
A leotard costume made of chiffon and net which is believed to be designed by William Travilla and intended to be worn for Marilyn to sing “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in the movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” but deemed inappropriate by the censors.
One item for sale with an eerie twist is an article of clothing, believed to be the last thing Monroe wore before she died. The white terry cloth robe, the last item of clothing Monroe wore before her death, is also for sale. Monroe died of an accidental overdose of sleeping pills in 1962.
The Julien’s Auctions Summer Entertainment Sale takes place on June 26 and June 27, 2009, in Las Vegas. The auction will include clothing, autographed photos and other Monroe memorabilia, including items from her Brentwood, Calif., home, and jewelry, books and other items that Elvis Presley gave to his longtime personal physician, Dr. Nick.
