Tonight the Metropolitan Museum of Art is hosting the Costume Institute Gala and it’s sure to be the event of the season. A-list stars, glamorous models and fashion designers are expected to attend wearing fashions finest. The fabulous crowd will be out in full force.
Honorary chair, Marc Jacobs, will be joined by co-chairs Kate Moss, Justin Timberlake and Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at this years dazzling event. This years theme is “The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion” and the exhibit examine a timeline of fashion from 1947 to 1997 and feature 86 works of haute couture and ready-to-wear. Tickets to the sold-out event were $7,500, surprising considering the economy.
Event chair Marc Jacobs purchased multiple tables so he can hold court with his fashionable circle of guests including Madonna (dressed in Louis Vuitton), Kate Moss (dressed in Marc Jacobs), Victoria Beckham (dressed in Marc Jacobs), Helena Christensen (dressed in Marc Jacobs), Kerry Washington (dressed in Louis Vuitton), Winona Ryder, and Rihanna. With the event a mere hours away Jacobs is said to be nervous about the women he is dressing for tonight’s soiree. He said: “I just want them to be happy. I don’t know anybody who wants to, like, dress somebody on their wedding day. It becomes like this one important choice you have to make, so everyone’s thinking, ‘What can I wear that will blow everyone away?’ And I don’t know the answer to that. Just look good and feel good and don’t worry about it.”
Jessica Alba will have all eyes on her arrival since she has chosen to wear a design by Jason Wu, the famed designer of Michelle Obama’s inauguration gown. Diego Della Valle will host Marisa Tomei (wearing Roger Vivier shoes and a Tod’s evening bag), Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld, Liz Goldwyn and Dree Hemingway at his table. Rachel Weisz will wear Vera Wang, Kate Hudson and Kate Bosworth will wear Stella McCartney, Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr will wear Dior (Dior spokeswoman Charlize Theron will not attend), Blake Lively will attend, Doutzen Kroes will wear Philip Lim, Iman will wear Donna Karan, Sasha Pivovarova will accompany Giambattista Valli, Marni is confirmed to dress Milla Jovovich.
Other starlet’s in attendance will be:
• Halle Berry is wearing Francisco Costa
• Diane Kruger is wearing Karl Lagerfeld, who will not attend
• Gisele Bundchen is accompanying John Galliano
• Jessica Stam is wearing Rodarte
• Lauren Hutton is attending with Michael Kors
• Rachel Bilson is wearing Brian Atwood
Three note-worthy supermodels who will not be attending are Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington. Considering the theme, it’s surprising that they will not be there. “The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” which opens to the public at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Wednesday May 6, underscores just how much the models were responsible in adding allure to some of the fashions. It combines multiple media forms, from panels of magazine pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Life, to famous fashion photographs and video clips.
